Getting Out Of My Own Way

I know for me starting out as a voice over artist was scary and overwhelming. There’s so much information out there from the internet, videos, books, improvisation, acting and podcasts on the subject of Voice Over. In the midst of truly needing to prioritize and stay on top of my goals was difficult. Honestly, I just wanted to do everything the right way and I found myself consuming information but not applying it. Why?? For me it was fear and procrastination. Bottom line I was so afraid of putting myself out there in the world – fear of being judged. I was working full time, part time and working on my voice over business – it was so much chaos. I told myself that I wanted to be the “perfect” voice over artist and do things the right way. It’s a lot of work in being a voice over artist from coaching, demos, website and managing a business. Not to mention creating a professional recording studio.

Then I realized what I needed to change first and foremost was my mindset. If I wanted to create a better life for myself, I needed to change my thinking and get out of my own way. There were many instances where things didn’t work out or took way longer than expected. Once I took a step back and just learned to relax in the middle of chaos. Instead of saying what I have to do to what I get to do.  It’s amazing by changing the words make a difference. It creates the excitement, the energy. You should try it!

The Many Hats of Voice Over

In the midst of wearing the many hats as a voice over artist, often times the need to step away, or take breaks and just breathe is needed. Which by the way is great for your performance. Plus I might add, when you’re feeling anxious or stressed it can and affect your voice, unless your project calls for it. Lastly, focus on the things that bring you joy, what gives you energy.

For me it’s sharing thoughts and offering words of encouragement not just for voice over but life in general. I love nature and listening to the outdoors brings me a sense of peace. I realize feelings of fear, chaos, and anxiety will come and go but learning how to feel the feeling and do it anyway is a big deal. And when all else fails go grab a hot cup of tea which is also great for your voice.
